Why air conditioning weakens, year after year
Nobody notices the day the AC started cooling less well. The decline is gradual – which is why most drivers only realise on the first genuinely hot day.
An air conditioning system isn’t perfectly sealed and can’t be: it has hoses, seals and joints through which a small amount of refrigerant normally escapes each year. The less there is left in the system, the more weakly it cools – and the harder the compressor has to work.
There’s a less pleasant side too: the refrigerant also carries the oil that lubricates the compressor. A system left for years with too little gas doesn’t just cool badly, it puts the compressor itself at risk – the most expensive part in the whole installation. Which is why “it’ll do” is rarely a saving.
The good news: most of the time nothing is broken. The system simply needs putting right – checked, properly evacuated and refilled with the exact quantity the manufacturer specifies.

Checking the system
We measure the pressures and check how cold it actually blows at the vents. That tells us whether it’s simply low on gas or something else – before we touch anything.
Refrigerant recharge
We evacuate the system properly, pull a vacuum and refill it with the exact quantity your model calls for – not “until it sounds about right”.
Leak tracing
If the system won’t hold gas, a simple refill is money thrown away. We look for where it’s escaping and tell you what the repair involves, with a price, before any work.
Cabin filter
A clogged cabin filter cuts the airflow and brings smells into the car. We check it and replace it on request – it’s a short, inexpensive job.
Compressor and components
Noise when the AC engages, a compressor clutch that won’t pull in, a fan that doesn’t start. We check them and tell you openly what gets repaired and what gets replaced.
The electrical side
Sometimes the AC won’t come on at all and the cause isn’t the gas but a sensor, a relay or wiring – which belongs to auto electrics.
We don’t pump gas into a leaking system
The most convenient “repair” on an AC system is to refill it and take the money. It blows cold for two months, the customer is happy – and next summer they’re back with the same problem, paying again. That’s not how we work.

On the first 35-degree day everyone discovers at the same time that their car no longer cools – and that’s exactly when the workshops fill up. A check done in spring saves you that queue and gives you time to repair calmly, if it turns out to be needed.
A detail few people know: air conditioning isn’t just for summer. In winter the system dries the air and clears a misted windscreen far faster than heat alone – so a working AC is also better visibility in the cold months. Run briefly now and then over winter, it also keeps the seals in shape.
